April 1930:
OBITUARY MOTHER MARY EVANGELIST COSTELLO. ‘
The death occurred on Monday of the Mother Superior of the Alnwick Convent of Mercy, Mary Evangelist Costello, aged eighty-four years.—R.I.P.
She was Mother Superior for forty-two years, but a successor was appointed when her health failed her about three years ago. In 1890 Mother Mary came from Guernsey to establish the convent at Alnwick, of which she bore the whole cost of erection. Jt has since been thrice added to and improved at her own expense. She was also responsible for the founding and management of the Convent High School and of St. John’s School.
Mother Mary was charitable to the poor and was a generous benefactor of St. Mary's Church in which she provided a new pulpit some years ago.
The church was also redecorated at her expense.
The funeral took place at Alnwick Cemetery, on Wednesday, prior to which Requiem Mass was celebrated by Bishop Thorman at St. Mary's Church.
