OS name books - Page 33

Freemens Arms: A good stone building with suitable accommodation and licensed as a public Inn under this name. It was formerly called William the Fourth

Bull Ring: A large circular stone with a hole on the centre to which the bulls were secured when the vulgar sport of Bullbaiting was practised here but this amusement has been discontinued about the beginning of the present century at which time the iron ring was removed but the stone still remains. The mile distances on all the roads leading from Alnwick are measured from this ancient object.
