Alnwick Playhouse

As well as being a landmark building, the Playhouse represents an important part of Alnwick's modern social and community life. Built in 1925 as a cinema and occasional music hall, it fell into disuse in 1979 but was brought back into use as a theatre and cinema in 1990. Following the completion of major works in 2019, the building now incorporates a theatre, library, tourist information centre and cafe.

January 15, 1925 announced that the old Mess Rooms, in Bondgate Without. had been acquired from the Duke of Northumberland by Fred A. Wilcox, to be converted into a picture hall and theatre. Messrs. J. Oswald and Sons, of Newcastle, are the architects for the new building, which is to accommodate 1,200 people. It will replace the King's Hall, in the Nag's Head Yard, which for generations has been run by the Wilcox family as the only theatre in the town.
