In 1872 William Hardy set up shop as a gunsmith in Alnwick. Lord Armstrong persuaded him to take his brother John James into partnership. By 1874 they were advertising ‘superior River and Sea Fishing tackle'. They divided the work: William kept the finances, while JJ handled the people side.
