In 1888 William Searle Hicks (1849-1902) took his brother-in-law Henry Clement Charlewood (1857-1943) into partnership and Hicks and Charlewood became a major force in ecclesiastical architecture in the north-east. Local work includes: St James Church, Alwick War Memorial, and St James Shilbottle.
